The priority is not to automate everything, but to intervene on frequent, measurable, and reversible processes. The result should be a lower MTTR, less exposure, fewer manual hours, and greater business continuity.

Taxonomic definitions

1. AIOps. Application of analytics, machine learning, and AI to technological operational data to correlate events, detect anomalies, identify likely causes, prioritize impacts, and recommend or execute actions. AIOps does not replace observability or processes; it relies on reliable telemetry and operational context.

2. SOAR. Orchestration, automation, and security response capabilities that integrate tools, data, and workflows to enrich alerts, manage cases, and execute predefined actions. NIST recognizes SOAR as a capability to coordinate response operations through automated workflows.

3. Closed-circuit automation. A model in which an event triggers a flow that validates conditions, runs remediation, verifies the result, documents the evidence, and closes or escalates the case without manual intervention. It should only be used when the action is safe, observable, authorized, and reversible.

Comparative table: reactive operation versus automated operation

Dimension

Reactive operation

Automated and governed operation

Start of work

User reports a fault

Telemetry detects the event

Prioritization

Order of arrival or urgency

Impact, criticality and risk

Diagnosis

Manual and fragmented

Correlation of events and context

Response

Specialist unit

Runbooks and orchestrated actions

SecOps

Isolated warnings

Enriched and prioritized cases

Scaling

Based on individual experience

Rules, context and RACI

Knowledge

Informal

Versatile and reusable

Evidence

It is built afterwards

It is generated during execution

Recovery

Correction

Preventive, assisted or autonomous

Main metric

Tickets are sold out

Risk, continuity and time regained

Improvement

After the incident

Continued backlog of automation

Control

Wide access

Minimum permits and approvals

Why IT Operations and SecOps remain in a reactive mode

Organizations do not remain reactive due to a lack of tools. They remain reactive because the tools operate in isolation.

The usual pattern is:

A platform generates an alert.

The team manually validates if it is real.

Look for information on other consoles.

Create or update a ticket.

Contact another area.

Requests authorization.

Executes an action.

Check the result.

It documents the evidence.

Case closed.

Each transfer introduces waiting, errors, and a loss of context.

The risk is increasing faster than human capacity to process it. Verizon’s DBIR 2026 analyzed more than 31,000 incidents and more than 22,000 confirmed vulnerabilities in 145 countries. It also identified the exploitation of vulnerabilities as the primary initial access mechanism, above the use of stolen credentials.

In this context, operating manually produces three effects:

Alerts compete for the same capacity.

The vulnerabilities remain exposed for longer.

Specialists spend hours collecting data and performing repetitive tasks.

The cost of reacting late

IBM calculated an average global cost of USD 4.44 million per breach in 2025. Organizations that extensively used AI and automation in security reduced the identification and containment cycle by an average of 80 days, with USD 1.9 million less in costs compared to organizations that did not use these capabilities.

The data does not mean that a tool automatically generates that savings. It demonstrates that speed, correlation, and systematic execution have a measurable financial effect.

Which processes are worth automating first?

Automating an unstable process only allows for more rapid errors to be made. Before choosing technology, select cases with the following characteristics:

High volume.

Clear rules.

Available time.

Defined responsible.

Enough history.

Priority matrix

Evaluate each candidate with a score from one to five:

Criterion

Question

Volume

How many times is it run per processes.

Actions with broad administrative permissions.

Regulatory decisions.

Public communication.

Permanent risk.

How to build an operational automation architecture

An automated operation requires end-to-end context.

Layer 1: telemetry and observability

It must collect information class="wp-block-list">

Infrastructure.

Applications.

Cloud.

Networks.

Endpoints.

Identities.

Logs.

Digital experience.

Business services.

Security checks.

Telemetry must answer what happened, where, since when, who is affected, and what changed before the event.

Layer 2: context

The isolated alert must relate to:

Active.

Owner.

Location.

Service.

Criticism.

Vulnerabilities.

Recent class="wp-block-paragraph">Without a CMDB, inventory and mapping of services, automation prioritizes by technical severity, not impact.

Layer 3: criteria.

Layer 5: government

Each automation must have:

<ul control

NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3 recommends incorporating incident response within integral risk management, rather than treating it as an isolated activity after the attack.

Automation should follow the same principle: be integrated into the government, not operate as a collection of The model incorporates an Outcome Owner, executive KPIs, early wins, and a post-first 90-day improvement cycle.

The difference isn’t in deploying another console. However, most of the repetitive work of diagnosis, enrichment, assignment, containment, and recovery will migrate to automated workflows.

Exploiting vulnerabilities, the growth of distributed environments, and the speed of attackers will make it impossible to depend solely on human intervention. Organizations that do not connect IT Operations and SecOps will accumulate alerts, exposure, and dependence on specialists.

Those that build governed automation will be able to intervene earlier, reserve talent for complex decisions, and turn operational speed into a measurable form of resilience.

FAQ

1. What is the first process that a company should automate? It should start with a frequent, documented, reversible, and measurable process. Alert enrichment, ticket assignment, backup validation, and remediation of detained agents are often suitable candidates because they reduce manual work without introducing a high risk.

2. Can SecOps automation replace the security team? No. Automation eliminates repetitive tasks, gathers context, and executes authorized actions. The team remains responsible for risk decisions, research, exceptions, crises, communication, and the evolution of controls. Its role changes from processing alerts to governing responses.

3. How is the ROI of automating IT operations demonstrated? The ROI is demonstrated by comparing the baseline with the subsequent results: avoided manual hours, reduced MTTD and MTTR, self-correcting incidents, avoided downtime, reduced exposure window, and freed capacity. The benefits must be contrasted against licensing, integration, operation, and maintenance.

Stop using specialists to chase alerts.
